Three days in Dubai sounds tight, but it's actually the sweet spot for a first visit. You'll see the skyline, touch the desert, eat absurdly well, and leave with a list of reasons to come back. Here's how to use every hour.
Day 1: The Modern City — Downtown & Marina
Start at the Burj Khalifa when it opens at 8 am — the observation deck on level 124 is uncrowded and the morning light turns the city gold. Book tickets in advance (walk-ins cost 40% more) and spend an hour absorbing the scale of what you're looking at.
Walk through Dubai Mall — not to shop, but to see the city's indoor ecosystem: an aquarium, an ice rink, and a waterfall taller than a five-storey building. Lunch at a Pakistani restaurant in Karama will cost you AED 25 and taste like a dream.
Evenings belong to Dubai Marina. Walk the waterfront promenade, take an abra (traditional boat) along the canal, and watch the city reflect itself in the Persian Gulf.
Day 2: Old Dubai — Heritage, Spices & the Creek
Wake up early and cross to Deira on the AED 1 water taxi. The Gold Souk opens at 9 am and stocks more gold per square metre than anywhere else on earth. The Spice Souk next door is smaller but the saffron, frankincense, and dried rose petals cost a fraction of supermarket prices.
Spend the afternoon at Al Fahidi Historic District — wind towers, coral-and-limestone buildings, and the Dubai Museum packed into a maze of lanes. It's the city before the skyscrapers.
The AED 1 water taxi crossing to Deira is the best value travel experience in Dubai. For less than a quarter, you get a five-minute boat ride that has been running since before the oil money arrived.
Day 3: Desert & Dinner Under the Stars
Book a morning desert safari with dune bashing, camel riding, and a sunrise that paints the sand every shade of orange. Most tours depart at 6 am and return by noon — leaving your afternoon free.
Spend your last evening at La Mer or Bluewaters Island for sunset cocktails, then splurge on your farewell dinner. Orfali Bros in JLT holds the title of Middle East's best restaurant and requires booking weeks ahead.
